About William Corner

I have an interest in both creative and technical fields (writing, design, photography, music, web development, video editing, audio production). I think I identified this pretty early on, whenever we were first asked to consider careers at school, although back in the 1990s my current profession didn’t exist.

This has always left me torn somewhat between an interest in the messy, organic sphere of human experience and culture (the poet), and an often obsessive focus on how to operate equipment or use computer software (the technician).

I’ve come to focus on two things in the here and now: creative writing, which I’ve pursued on-and-off from an early age, and web design and development, which is generally what I’ve been paid to do.

For many years I worked as an English language teacher, spending a short time in Bangalore, India and a much longer time in Yokohama and Tokyo, Japan. I also worked in London, helping to set up a Summer School programme that combined learning English with many creative activities, including all those listed above.

I’ve spent more than 10 years in web design and development, working in-house, as a freelancer and as a full-time developer at creative agencies. I’m currently Senior Technician for Web and Interaction Design at Norwich University of the Arts; a role which certainly blends the creative with the technical.

In 2021, I took an ‘Intermediate Fiction’ course at the National Centre for Writing in Norwich to get involved in writing at a social level. In 2025, I took a follow-up online course with the centre to further develop my project.

My writing often focuses on how thoughts and feelings are connected to a sense of place, with a philosophical focus on how we are orientated and disoriented by the variable ‘maps’ we use to make sense of reality.

My main project, ‘The Seams of the City’, is currently at the draft stage and a ‘beta’ version of the web app is available to read online. I’ll be documenting my progress, along with any shorter pieces, on this website.
